Useful websites for ESOL Tutors

Thanks to Jenny and Helen for their suggestions for this list. has a variety of printable worksheets and lesson plans and interactive materials. It is an offshoot of the British Council site. has further materials but you need to register to access them.

All the old Skills for Life resources are available at is a non-government site which offers videos, class ideas, radio exerpts, flashcards and a refugee video about a centre in Yorkshire. – previously run by the Southbank lang and lit unit, now defunct, but taken over by the Institute of Education who are responsible for reading research in the UK .. even reading for ESOL learners.  – good for flashcards, trace overs,  worksheets, phonics at PE level and E1. – good for all low level work, loads of phonics, and little programmes that allow you to create your own games/board games  and worksheets e.g. dominoes has loads of good materials, well organised into topics and skills, at all levels, but you can’t  access any of them unless you first contribute your own worksheets.  You get a ‘point’ to use every time someone else downloads the sheets you contribute. – lessons based on current news articles, and including audio files, suitable for E2+. – a site for teachers to share resources they have created. – not specifically an ESOL site, but a rich source of information about British history, culture, festivals and traditions. Well worth a look! – this site is aimed at primary schools, but has lots of clear, colourful resources which can be used with lower level learners.

And don’t forget Jo Gakonga’s teacher training videos, which can be found at
